Summer is here! Summer means seaside and ouzo, tsipouro and sea fish recipes! One of my favorite ingredients is cuttlefish! You can cook it in many, so many ways…

Cuttlefish with Black Rice





















Is writing the only thing you can do with Ink?

One of those recipes is cuttlefish with rice and ink, the cuttlefish’s ink!
It is a light recipe that can feed many people at once and it has also a respective view!!

When I say black rice I do not mean real black rice but I mean the simple white rice that is becoming black by adding the cuttlefish ink to it. Isn’t Magic?
Rice takes this beautiful blue-black colour and this delicious taste of sea!

Have you ever tried it? To eat or to cook it?

If not, get out of your house, go to your fisherman and ask him for cuttlefish!
Tell him to clean them but to KEEP the little INK BAGS and give them to you together with the cleaned cuttlefish. It will look like this!!

Do not through it in the garbage!! It will be a waste!

When you mix the ink with a little water, it becomes a black juice that will add a spectacular taste and look into your dish!


Cuttlefish with “black” rice

  • 1-1 1/2 kg cuttlefish
  • 2 big onions
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 2 cups of rice
  • sea salt
  • fresh pepper
  • cuttlefish ink


  1. Clean the cuttlefish that you bought from your fisherman under water well
  2. Cut them to pieces, about 2x2 cm
  3. Cut the onion into slices
  4. Chop the tomatoes
  5. Mix the INK BAGS with 1/2 cup water WELL!! Left it aside
  6. Cooking
  7. Saute the onions with olive oil (add a little salt in it), until blond.
  8. Add cuttlefish and saute them for some minutes
  9. Add the tomatoes, sea salt and fresh pepper
  10. Cover the pot and cook for almost 90' min.
  11. Taste to see if the cuttlefish is fairly soft and add the rice, 4-5 cups of water and the INK-WATER
  12. Cook them in low heat until boiled
  13. Taste it and correct in salt if needed
  14. Serving
  15. This dish is so tasty either hot or cold!
  16. Accompany your dish with ouzo and ice
